a simple tool to improve my focus: flexible timeboxing ⏰

Focusing is essential to getting things done and even more so for learning. But our focus depends on a lot of variables and is affected by a huge variety of events. It depends on how we slept, the time of day, what we ate, our emotional state, our stress level…

LAMBDA: Setting up a digital learning environment

We need space to learn. Space, where we can muddle through content and notes, where we can take abstract notes and refine them into clean notes, and where we can keep track of our questions and curiosities. We need space that is forgiving and which allows us to take time…

I love the new design of Obsidian 🎉

This was a total surprise. Last week I took the time and updated my Mac system. I wasn’t thinking anything. I wasn’t expecting anything. But to my surprise, it also updated Obsidian. And it was such a nice surprise that gave me the energy and motivation to use Obsidian more. …

I took a break from Obsidian

Hey hey. I have been writing and posting very inconsistently lately. It’s basically because I took a break from Obsidian. I focused on other projects and didn’t take many notes nor used Obsidian at all. I just had no real Obsidian experience to write about. But now I’m back. Hopefully. …

This changed my writing experience in Obsidian

I’m not very comfortable writing these articles or even notes inside Obsidian. I always have a fear of making mistakes, writing poorly, spelling words wrong, or using incorrect grammar. But Grammarly gave me the confidence to just write and to just take notes. I don’t have the fear lingering in…

The trap of being a curious note-taker | Obsidian

I usually like taking notes while reading a book, listening to a podcast or watching a lecture. It feels good to muddle through new concepts, think about new insights and figure out how everything might be connected. But it is not always that great. Being a curious note-taker and learner…

Setting up the LANA method in Scrintal | Obsidian

I enjoy using the graph view in Obsidian. It helps me take a more visual approach to note-taking. It makes taking notes more nonlinear and creative instead of linear and rigorous. I’m able to view my notes in organized clusters with meaningful connections. …

Obsidian and the frustrating puzzle

Note-taking in Obsidian can be really frustrating from time to time. Either you are trying to understand a concept and want to take notes but the penny just won’t drop or you are trying to make new connections and it just won’t work. It takes a lot of effort. But it also feels like a puzzle. A puzzle you can easily be obsessed with. A puzzle you muddle through. And at some point, the penny just drops. You feel comfortable taking notes on a new concept you finally understood. You start making new insightful connections and you reorganise your new and old understanding. It finally makes sense.

How to learn: The PURE method

Most of the time we think learning is just consuming content and taking tons of notes. After that, we try to memorize the notes we took by reading them over and over again. But deep down we know learning like this isn’t right. And it isn’t. Learning is not only…

Where should note-taking start? | Obsidian

It can be difficult to take notes and connect them to your existing insights and concepts. Most of the time, I’m just taking notes to get blindsided in the end. …
